The Dutchman is rumoured to be on the brink of a return to Old Trafford as manager Louis van Gaal looks to add his compatriot to his Red Devils coaching staff.
Meulensteen left the 20-time English champions in May 2013 after club legend Sir Alex Ferguson called time on his reign at Old Trafford, rejecting the chance to work under David Moyes.
The 50-year-old endured a miserable reign as Fulham manager last season before he was sacked and replaced by German coach Felix Magath in February.
And former Sunderland midfielder Gray believes Meulensteen would be a great appointment to the United coaching staff if the recent rumours come true.
