Wayne Rooney hailed Raheem Sterling’s man-of-the-match performance as England laboured to victory over Norway at Wembley in Wednesday’s friendly.

Following an uninspiring and goalless first half, captain Rooney drilled home a 68th-minute penalty after Sterling had been fouled by Omar Elabdellaoui.

He’s great to play with and I thought tonight at times he was really good

And the 28-year-old Manchester United striker was full of praise for the Liverpool teenager after his eye-catching display in north London.

“He’s a threat,” Rooney said of Sterling. “He takes the ball and he gets at players – it doesn’t always come off but he’s an exciting player and he makes things happen.

“He’s great to play with and I thought tonight at times he was really good.”

Rooney, however, was less enthusiastic about his own display at Wembley. “I thought I could have done better,” the striker added.

“I think we all could have done better but it was important that we got the victory tonight, especially going into the game [in Switzerland] on Monday.”
