Rene Meulensteen feels that Arsenal could be the right club to get the best out of Danny Welbeck.

The Gunners wrapped up a £16m deal to sign the England striker from Manchester United on transfer deadline day after the Red Devils signed Radamel Falcao.

He’s the sort of player that could really strengthen Arsenal

And Meulensteen, who coached Welbeck during his spell as United first-team coach under Sir Alex Ferguson, believes that the 23-year-old could end up being a big hit in north London.

“I think Wenger’s done a really good job for both parties, also for Danny,” Meulensteen told Sky Sports.

“I hate to see him go but for him it’s a fantastic move and he’s the sort of player that could really strengthen Arsenal.

“He’s excellent to work with. I’ve known Danny since he was eight or nine years of age.

“Danny is not an out-and-out goalscorer, that’s probably where his criticism comes from. You could probably say that he should have scored more goals in the time that he’s been on the pitch.

“He’s a link player, he’s a creator, he’s unpredictable and do not forget he’s still young.

“There’s still mileage in him and if he is in the right team and given the right run of games, I think he will score more goals.”

Welbeck, who is currently on international duty with England, could make his debut for the Gunners in the Premier League home match against Manchester City on 13 September.
