Keith Gillespie believes Manchester United are back after strengthening their squad in the summer transfer window.

The Red Devils signed Colombia international Radamel Falcao on loan in a reported £6m and Ajax defender Daley Blind completed a £14m move to Old Trafford.

The United philosophy should be to compete and succeed at the highest level. It wasn’t working I believe it will now. Change had to come

Van Gaal landed British record £59.7m signing Angel di Maria last week after signing Ander Herrera, Luke Shaw and Marcos Rojo in deals totalling nearly £60m.

United have been accused of panic buying after seventh-place finish last season and a winless start to the current Premier League campaign.

However, former United midfielder Gillespie defended Van Gaal’s spending and decision to allow the likes of Danny Welbeck, Nani and Tom Cleverley to leave.

“In all honesty the players LVG has moved on would have been my choice to. Welbeck Nani and Cleverley never saw as United players,” Gillespie posted on Twitter.

“Drastic action was needed. Pursuing the path United was on was death by a 1000 cuts. Quality of competing clubs was way better. We’re back
