Man Utd’s Angel Di Maria ‘wanted Real Madrid stay’

Agent says Angel Di Maria would have been happy to stay at Real Madrid and earn less money than he is at Manchester United

Angel Di Maria would have been happy to stay at Real Madrid and earn less money than he is at Manchester United, according to the player’s agent.

The Argentina international sealed a British record £59.7m move to United last month after he was deemed surplus to requirements at the Bernabeu.

But the 26-year-old’s representative says that his client was keen on staying at the Spanish club before his switch.

“Di Maria went to Manchester United asking for €8m net. He would have stayed in Madrid for a lot less,” Eugenio Lopes said on Spanish radio station Cadena COPE.

“Angel wanted to stay. The difference [in the contract negotiations] was €1m a year. Madrid began talks but would not budge.”

Lopes also hit out at Madrid for failing to live up to their word in their contract negotiations.

“When he arrived in Madrid, he accepted a lower salary than they promised,” he added.

“They promised to improve his contract after six months but took two years to do it.”
