David Beckham has hailed England and Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney as a “great talent”.

The 28-year-old forward has come pressure after his disappointing performance as the Three Lions limped to a 1-0 victory over Norway at Wembley on Wednesday.

Wayne’s such a great talent, such a great player, people love him, fans love him and it’s great to see him with the armband

Rooney was named as United captain last month before Roy Hodgson announced that the Red Devils forward would take over the armband from Steven England.

And Beckham, who captained England on 59 occasions during a 115-cap international career, backed Rooney to be a successful Three Lions skipper.

“He’s one of the most experienced players in the team now,” Beckham told the FA’s website.

“He’s now the most respected players in the team. Young players will look up to Wayne for inspiration; he’s a player who wears his heart on his sleeve.

“People want to see that passion; you fight for every ball and celebrate every goal you score, or every goal you set up.

“That’s what Wayne’s all about. Wayne’s such a great talent, such a great player, people love him, fans love him and it’s great to see him with the armband. It’s something I know he’ll cherish.”
