Jamie Redknapp believes it was a good for Liverpool that Mario Balotelli didn’t score in a 3-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

The Italy international made his Reds debut at White Hart Lane on Sunday following his £16m move to Anfield from Serie A outfit AC Milan last week.

Balotelli fluffed an early chance to break the deadlock before goals from Raheem Sterling, captain Steven Gerrard and Alberto Moreno sealed three points.

And former Reds midfielder Redknapp felt that it was important Balotelli didn’t take all the headlines after a superb team performance.

“The best thing that happened to Liverpool on Sunday was Mario Balotelli not scoring,” Redknapp wrote in the Daily Mail. “If he had, the game and the headlines would all be about him.

“Instead it was another team display that showed the gulf in class between Spurs and Liverpool. Balotelli bought into the work ethic and Brendan Rodgers will hope he keeps it up.”

Balotelli scored 20 goals in 54 appearances for Manchester City before moving to Milan.
