Louis van Gaal admits that he made a “stupid mistake” by giving himself three months to implement his philosophy at Manchester United.

The Dutchman said that it would take him around 90 days to get to grips with managing the Old Trafford club when he first took over at United during the summer.

However, the former Bayern Munich boss has now come to regret mentioning that time-frame after a stuttering start to his reign in charge of the Premier League outfit.

“It was my stupid fault I think, that I mentioned a period, exactly there months,” Van Gaal told MUTV. “So now I have to answer a lot of questions about the three months.

“I believe in my philosophy and Manchester United has belief in that philosophy. Because of that I’m here.

“It maybe needs more time. Maybe the match against West Brom is the start of a new period.”

United travel to West Bromwich Albion in their next Premier League game on Monday night.
