The 19-year-old sparked controversy after Roy Hodgson revealed the Reds winger complained of tiredness ahead of England’s 1-0 victory over Estonia on Sunday.
He’s a talented player and you have got to be careful when you’re a young player
Sterling has emerged as one of England’s brightest prospects over the past 12 months, earning a place in Hodgson’s World Cup squad after scoring nine league goals last season.
And United assistant manager Giggs, who called time on a decorated 24-year playing career, defended Sterling’s decision to ask Hodgson to be rested.
“It’s tough when you’re a young player,” Giggs told Sky Sports News HQ.
“He’s an explosive player, he’s a player who is exciting, a player you would pay and go and watch.
“Unfortunately, he’s at Liverpool who are our biggest rivals.”
Giggs continued: “But he’s a talented player and you have got to be careful when you’re a young player, it’s a short career and you have to look towards the future.
“Speaking from my own experience, I wanted to train every day, I wanted to play every day and I’m sure he’s no different.”
