Former Reds manager Gerard Houllier handed Gerrard the prestigious role after stripping Finnish centre-half Sami Hyypia of the captain’s armband in favour of the midfielder.
Gerrard led the Reds to a 3-0 victory over Olimpija Ljubljana in the talismanic midfielder’s first game as Liverpool’s new captain in 2003.
And the 34-year-old has retained the feeling of pride at being Liverpool captain, having lifted the Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup as skipper.
“11 years ago today I became the captain of my boyhood team one of the proudest days of my career . It’s a huge honour to captain this great club,” Gerrard posted on Instagram.
Earler on Wednesday morning, Liverpool paid tribute to their long-serving captain on the club’s Instagram account.
“On this day 11 years ago, @stevengerrard became #LFC skipper and played his first game as the Reds’ official captain in a 3-0 win against Olimpija Ljubljana.”
Liverpool make the trip to Queens Park Rangers on Sunday afternoon, looking to record their fourth Premier League win of the season.
