Steven Gerrard has taken to Instagram to celebrate his 11th anniversary of his Liverpool captaincy.

Former Reds manager Gerard Houllier handed Gerrard the prestigious role after stripping Finnish centre-half Sami Hyypia of the captain’s armband in favour of the midfielder.

Gerrard led the Reds to a 3-0 victory over Olimpija Ljubljana in the talismanic midfielder’s first game as Liverpool’s new captain in 2003.

And the 34-year-old has retained the feeling of pride at being Liverpool captain, having lifted the Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup as skipper.

“11 years ago today I became the captain of my boyhood team one of the proudest days of my career . It’s a huge honour to captain this great club,” Gerrard posted on Instagram.

Earler on Wednesday morning, Liverpool paid tribute to their long-serving captain on the club’s Instagram account.

“On this day 11 years ago, @stevengerrard became #LFC skipper and played his first game as the Reds’ official captain in a 3-0 win against Olimpija Ljubljana.”

Liverpool make the trip to Queens Park Rangers on Sunday afternoon, looking to record their fourth Premier League win of the season.
