United manager Louis van Gaal named Rooney as Nemanja Vidic’s successor at the start of the season ahead of experienced Netherlands international Robin van Persie.
I think it was something he was going to need over the coming years
Rooney scored three goals in six Premier League appearanc before earning a three-game ban following his sending off in a 2-1 victory over West Ham United last month.
And former United captain Ferdinand believes the added responsibility will aid Rooney as the 28-year-old looks to equal Sir Bobby Charlton’s England and Red Devils goal records.
“Wayne’s record demanded that he wears the Manchester United armband,” Ferdinand told the Manchester Evening News. “He deserves it.
“Wayne has things to reach for still and the captaincy is another responsibility that will help him to get to those landmarks quicker.
“I think he needed it now. I have known what it is like to be at a club for a long time like Wayne and you need those little extras, that extra lift or kick on to push on again.
“I think it was something he was going to need over the coming years.”
