The 34-year-old celebrated his 11th anniversary as skipper of Liverpool on Wednesday after being appointed by ex-Reds manager Gerard Houllier in 2003.
The most important thing is he puts the team in front of everybody else including himself
Current Liverpool boss Rodgers named Henderson as the Reds’s new vice-captain at the start of the season after an impressive 18 months at Anfield.
And the England international spoke of his admiration for Gerrard, who has lifted the Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup as Liverpool captain.
“Stevie’s probably not only the best captain for Liverpool and before with England, but in the game itself,” Henderson told Liverpool’s magazine.
“Being around him has benefited me a lot. Every day I watch him. He’s been the best and most influential player here for such a long time but he still wants to get better.
“He takes training really seriously and sets the tone for how things should be. The most important thing is he puts the team in front of everybody else including himself.”
