Arsenal

Emiliano Martinez Arsenal’s third-choice goalkeeper could only wave at Piszczek’s low cross, but did well to push Mkhitaryan’s close-range effort wide later in the first half. 7/10

Calum Chambers While the £16m summer signing didn’t standout out, the 19-year-old carried out his duties well. Could have tested the Dortmund goalkeeper if Ramsey had played a first-time ball on the half-hour mark. Got up and down the wing well. 7

Per Mertesacker The tall German wasn’t overly tested, somewhat surprisingly. 6

Nacho Monreal Monreal wasn’t put under too much pressure as Dortmund probed but lacked cutting edge. 6

Kieran Gibbs The England left-back showed great pace to deny Aubayemang a clear run at Martinez’s goal. Good performance. 7

Mikel Arteta The veteran midfielder was booked for a needless challenge after he made a strong start in front of the defence. Kept his composure to avoid a second booking before he was replaced due to injury. 6

Aaron Ramsey Great determination to beat a Dortmund player to a loose ball and tee up Sanogo, who wasted the chance. Could have played in Chambers but took too long to release the ball. 6

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain The England forward was a constant for the home side. The 21-year-old continually demanded the ball from his team-mates, was unafraid to turn and run at the Dortmund defence and even played an inch-perfect Hollywood pass to Sanchez. Great performance on his 100th Arsenal appearance. 8

Santi Cazorla Played a pivotal role in Sanogo’s opener, playing a one-two with the striker. Cazorla will be happy with his display, even if his set-piece delivery was disappointing. 7

Alexis Sanchez (Man of the match) A slow start. He failed to spot Ramsey in support when Arsenal had Dortmund on the back-foot. Even below par, the Chilean was Arsenal’s best player. He proved that with a sublime 56th-minute strike. 8

Yaya Sanogo Eyebrows were raised when the untested 21-year-old was named in Arsenal’s starting line-up. Arms were raised after just a minute as the Gunners celebrated his superb goal. Took too many touches when he was presented with a second glorious chance inside 10 minutes. 8

Roman Weidenfeller Had to endure the embarrassment of being nutmegged for the opener, by Sanogo of all Arsenal players! Could do little to stop Sanchez’s effort. 6

Lukasz Piszczek Looked to attack Gibbs when the left-back was left exposed by Sanchez, which was quite often. Booked for an illegal shirt grab. 7

Neven Subotic Cautioned for leaving his mark on Sanchez in the 13th minute. Didn’t look overly comfortable. 5

Matthias Ginter Ginter failed to halt Sanogo for Arsenal’s opener. A decent performance after that error, though. 5

Marcel Schmelzer Didn’t feature as much as his opposite number as Oxlade-Chamberlain and Chambers doubled up on the left-back. 5

Sven Bender A calming presence in midfield for the visitors. The Germany international kept Dortmund moving, even if his passing wasn’t the most adventurous. 6

Ilkay Gundogan Gundogan proved he has an engine room capable of the coping with the rigours of being a box-to-box midfielder. However, the timing of his passes was poor. 6

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang Almost gifted Arsenal a second inside 10 minutes with a careless pass. Didn’t get into the game. 5

Henrikh Mkhitaryan Mkhitaryan registered Dortmund’s first attempt on goal, although his effort floated high into the stands. He nearly netted an equaliser but Martinez managed to get something on the midfielder’s effort. Dortmund’s biggest threat. 7

Kevin Grosskreutz He did a lot of running, penalised for a foul on Cazorla. He showed plenty of guile, but lacked quality. 7

Ciro Immobile Couldn’t quite connect with Piszczek’s dangerous low cross. He will make the highlight reels, though, after he fell for some silky Cazorla footwork. 6

Substitutes

Shinji Kagawa Didn’t have an impact. N/A

Adrián Ramos Clattered by Mertesacker within minutes of his introduction. 5
