Arsene Wenger has told Aaron Ramsey to focus on “playing well” and forget about trying to get on the scoresheet for Arsenal.

The Wales midfielder, 23, has come in for criticism for a string of below-par displays for the Gunners in recent weeks.

Goal-scoring is a consequence of playing well, so focus on playing well

However, Wenger believes that Ramsey, who was voted Arsenal’s player of the season last term, needs to focus on doing the simple things well.

Asked what advice he’d give Ramsey, Wenger replied: “Just keep the priorities right. A midfielder is a guy who defends well makes the other players play – focus on that.

“I think you have to be guided by not what people say, but the way you want to play and the [way the] game should be played.

“When you score a goal but have a disastrous game, people say you have been great.

“As a midfielder you have to keep the priorities right. Defend well, attack well and give good balls to other players. That’s basically what the game is about.

“It’s not about goal-scoring – goal-scoring is a consequence of playing well, so focus on playing well.”
