Rickie Lambert deserves to be given a chance against Chelsea this weekend, according to Emile Heskey.

Enhanced odds: Liverpool or draw @ 5/1 or Chelsea @ 6/1!

Lambert has made just one league start for the Reds this season since joining from Southampton, while current first choice striker Mario Balotelli has not scored a league goal in nearly 11-and-a-half hours.

And Heskey, who netted 60 goals in 223 games for the Reds, thinks that it is time for Lambert to be given his chance.

“I would try Rickie Lambert to see what he is capable of doing because he is champing at the bit and we all know he has got goals in him,” Heskey told talkSPORT.

“I am fan of Mario but at this moment in time it is not clicking for him. He probably needs just a bit of a rest to get that hunger back, that fight back, to go again.”

Heskey also poured cold water on suggestions that Steven Gerrard should be left out for Saturday’s clash with the Blues.

He said: “The manager wants him to play more of a holding role and he has done that role pretty well.

“I would start with Stevie. He is a dominant figure in there and with him on the pitch I think Liverpool are stronger.”
