Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers play Steven Gerrard in an advanced-midfield role.

The former England captain has come under criticism in recent weeks as the 34-year-old continues to struggle to shield his leaky defence.

They may be better of putting someone else there, in terms of Lucas, who will think defensively

And ex-Liverpool centre-half Carragher reckons Rodgers should put a defensive-minded midfielder in Gerrard’s current position and shuffle his skipper further up the pitch.

“I think Steven is [giving his manager a problem at the moment],” Carragher said on Sky Sports’s Monday Night Football.

“Why is Steven Gerrard in that role? He isn’t a Mascherano and he isn’t a Hamann, who played in front of me. They were interested in getting a ball. That was Stevie and Alonso’s job when they played alongside those players.

“Stevie’s role is to get on that ball. The reason he has become so important to Liverpool over the past six months is because teams are man marking him. So they’re nullifying him slightly.

“Over the year, Gerrard has had a relationship with Owen, Torres, Suarez and Sturridge. It is just a look. They know where the ball is going. He hasn’t got that with any of the stirkers (Balotelli, Borini and Lambert).

“If he isn’t getting that creativity because of that lack of understanding and he is getting man marked, looking at that position, they may be better of putting someone else there, in terms of Lucas, who will think defensively.

“This team needs protection. Steven isn’t a great protector of the defence. He isn’t a Hamann or a Mascherano. Put a defensive player there and help the defence get the clean sheet. Maybe put Stevie further forward to help with the creativity.”
