Jose Mourinho admitted he struggled to convince his Chelsea players that the game would be difficult after a 1-1 draw with Maribor.

Maribor took a surprise 1-0 lead in the 50th minute through Agim Ibraimi’s impressive strike before Serbian midfielder Nemanja Matic levelled with 20 minutes remaining in the Group G clash.

Chelsea had the opportunity to seal three points when Eden Hazard earned an 84th-minute penalty, but the Belgium international saw his right-footed attempt saved.

And Mourinho conceded that his Chelsea players struggled to remain focused at Stadion Ljudski vrt.

“I was conscious of it, but I was not successful in passing over that message,” Mourinho said.

“If I cannot convince the players that the game is difficult and you have to play from minute one, obviously it’s my responsibility.”

Mourinho praised his Chelsea side for their reaction to falling behind in the 50th minute in Slovenia.

“Many times surprises happen when people are not fully focused, when they believe the game can’t be a difficult one,” Mourinho added.

“Only when Maribor scored did the players realise the game was in danger. After that, a fantastic reaction. We deserved to win, clearly.

“We scored two goals, two very good goals. The second goal, the referee (Italian Daniele Orsato) decided to disallow but it’s a clear goal.

“Normally we should win because we scored two goals. But we have to accept it.

“We didn’t reach the number of goals that we should have in the second half, but the team played well. And we scored a great second goal.

“And the referee’s team did not have a good night.”
