Messi breaks record with a hat trick in Sevilla rout

Lionel Messi finally made the La Liga scoring record his own in the best possible way by netting a hat-trick against Sevilla. Beginning the game on 250 goals, just one behind the legendary Athletic Bilbao forward Telmo Zarra, Messi had endured a mini drought by his standards. However, a sublime free-kick brought him level before he slid home to officially claim the record as his own. His third soon followed as he rounded off his special night in the best way possible. He was forced to stay on the pitch following the 5-1 win and watch a montage of his goals as the Nou Camp went into tribute mode. Who knows how many more he can score?

Eibar no match for Ronaldo and co

Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice in Real Madrid’s 4-0 victory over Eibar to maintain the club’s impressive scoring form. Lowly Eibar are the smallest club in La Liga, as just under 6,000 watched them defeated by the European champions, but at times made it difficult for their illustrious visitors. The compact pitch and pressing style forced Madrid to concentrate, but again, they were able to score at will. James Rodriguez and Karim Benzema grabbed the others, keeping Madrid at the top of the table for another week.

Moyes’ boys endure dull Deportivo draw

David Moyes’ first game as manager of Real Sociedad was a damp squib as his side were unable to break down an average Deportivo side. It perhaps highlighted how much work he has on his hands, with former manager Jagoba Arrasate leaving the club bereft of creative players. Nevertheless, the side will have to improve ahead of next week’s derby against Bilbao, a game Moyes will be briefed heavily on during the week. A win there and his relationship with the club will skyrocket.

Two off as Atletico get their set-pieces spot on

On their way to the title last season, Atletico were supremely effective in everything they did. This season, little has changed, especially from set-pieces. The side excited scored their sixth goal from a corner this season already as they beat Malaga 3-1. Antoine Griezmann was one of the scorers as both sides ended with ten men in a hot-tempered encounter. The win moves Atletico up to third as they improve from their early season slump, with performances beginning to pick up too.

Cordoba blow two goal lead against relegation rivals Elche

The Premier League has seen how Burnley have improved since their first win of the season, gaining precious momentum in their fight for survival. Cordoba should look on and take spirit from their revival, but cannot get that all important win. After missing a golden opportunity against 10 man Deportivo, they dropped points again against Elche, drawing having been 2-0 up. Jonathas’ volley too equaliser was the highlight, snatching a vital point for 19th placed Elche. After 11 winless games and two fantastic chances, you have to wonder if Cordoba will win a game all season.
