Paul Scholes has admitted that he has been surprised by the lack of progress Manchester United have made under Louis van Gaal this season.

The Red Devils find themselves 10th in the Premier League table after taking just 13 points from their opening 10 games of their first campaign under the Dutchman.

And former United midfielder Scholes feels that Van Gaal has demonstrated a different “demeanour” to his spell in charge of the Netherlands since arriving at Old Trafford over the summer.

He appears very different to the man you saw on the touchline at the World Cup finals

“Louis van Gaal talks about progress. Well, I expected Manchester United to have a better record by this stage of the season,” Scholes wrote in the London Evening Standard.

“It is difficult to figure out what Van Gaal is thinking during games. His demeanour doesn’t change throughout. He looks a bit subdued. Certainly he appears very different to the man you saw on the touchline at the World Cup finals.

“And the problem in defence should have been addressed in the summer. It was not as if Van Gaal was unaware that Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans were susceptible to injuries.”
