Per Mertesacker has told his Arsenal team-mates that it is the whole side’s job to defend better – not just the back four.

The Gunners spectacularly squandered a three-goal lead against Anderlecht in the Champions League on Tuesday night as the Belgian side scored three times in the second half to snatch a surprise 3-3 draw at Emirates Stadium.

You can not afford for just five or six players to defend

Per Mertesacker

And the Arsenal vice-captain believes that it is up to the whole of Arsene Wenger’s squad to improve their defending.

“We have to defend better as a team,” said Mertesacker. “Even when we dropped [back, Anderlecht] always looked dangerous.

“We need to be more aware of that, to defend better as a team. When we drop sometimes everyone has to be involved to defend.

“You can not afford for just five or six players to defend, or just the back four.

“That’s what we lacked especially in the final third and in the last 20 minutes.”

Who’s to blame for Arsenal’s collapse?
