The Reds are five points behind fourth-placed Manchester United after a 3-1 defeat by Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Sunday.
It’s going to be extremely difficult with a lack of points, form and confidence
And Thompson reckons Liverpool, who are languishing in 12th place in the Premier League, will struggle to pick up results without injured Daniel Sturridge.
“The only thing going in Liverpool’s favour is that the so called ‘big teams’ have been average and you look at what Southampton are doing and they show there’s still a possibility,” Thompson told Sky Sports.
“However, the odds don’t lie and it’s hard to see where the next win is going to come from. It’s going to be extremely difficult with a lack of points, form and confidence.

Liverpool make the trip to Ludogorets on Wednesday as Brendan Rodgers’s side bid to keep their hopes of reaching the Champions League knockout stage alive.
