Ten-year old Gnabry went along to a local tournament to watch the up-and-coming talent in Germany, and Ozil won the player of the tournament.
The Arsenal forward managed to get a photo with the former Real Madrid star, something which Ozil likes to remind his compatriot from time-to-time.
Speaking to the club’s website, Gnabry recalled his first meeting with Ozil: “It’s a funny story.
“He teases me with it up to this day. He was involved in a tournament near my home town and I was about 10 years old, so I always went to watch it.
“He was the best player at the tournament and I got a picture with him back then – but you better not ask him about it because otherwise he will be too happy!”
Gnabry recently made his first appearance in 11 months for Arsenal’s Under-21s against Newcastle following a knee injury.
The German winger is one of the brightest prospects in world football and his development as a player has been helped by Ozil, someone who he admires.
“He’s one of the best playmakers there is in the world, and for me as an attacking player, it’s great to play alongside him and learn from him,” Gnabry added.
“It’s a lot easier to play with someone like Mesut because he can make you shine. I’m happy to be playing with him and learning from him.
“He’s very special. We’ve all seen what he is capable of. When he was at Madrid, in my eyes, he was one of the best playmakers in the world and still is up to now.”
Ozil also had a spell out injured after damaging his knee but since his return he has scored two goals to help propel Arsenal into third in the Premier League table.
