Liverpool deserve credit for holding their nerve and sticking with Brendan Rodgers, according to former Toffee Andy Hinchcliffe.

The Reds cemented their top-four credentials with a comfortable 2-0 win against Champions League-chasing Southampton at St Mary’s on Sunday.

The five-time European champions are two points behind fourth-placed Manchester United after an impressive 10-game unbeaten run in the Premier League over the past few months.

The Merseyside club haven’t lost a game since a 3-0 defeat at Old Trafford in December, which left Liverpool languishing in 10th place, and Hinchcliffe praised Rodgers for masterminding a Reds revival.

“Liverpool held their nerve when things were going badly,” Hinchcliffe told Sky Sports News.

“Liverpool fans were critical of the way they were playing and some bad results, and they could have had a knee jerk reaction and decided to change things.

“They’ve always felt Brendan was the right man for Liverpool. They needed Daniel Sturridge back, which has happened. They’ve tinkered with their system and they’re getting their key players out there regularly. That’s all any manager wants. Now we are starting to see the real Liverpool.”

Liverpool haven’t conceded a goal in their last five away games in the Premier League after Rodgers opted to switch to a back three of Martin Skrtel, Mamadou Sakho and Emre Can.

Former Everton defender Hinchcliffe highlighted the Slovakia international as a key factor behind Liverpool’s recent resurgence.

“It is about resilience. Martin Skrtel has been absolutely outstanding for Liverpool,” Hinchcliffe added.

“They are miserly at the back. Liverpool have that with players like Skrtel at the back.”
