Mario Suarez’s agent has warned Arsenal and Liverpool that they face strong competition in the race to sign the defensive midfielder from Atletico Madrid this summer.

Both the Gunners and the Reds have been touted as destinations for the midfielder as the speculation continues to mount about his future.

However, Suarez’ representative Manuel Garcia Quilón has said that Serie A appears to be the most likely destination for the player, with Milan, Inter and Napoli all interested in the 28-year-old.

Quilón is quoted as saying by Metro: “He is a spectacular player and the Italians wanted him. He was followed in January by three or four Italian teams, including Milan, Inter and Napoli.

“At the moment I couldn’t say if there are any meetings planned but it’s true that in the past he was pursued by Milan.

“We’re talking about an extraordinary player, who can represent the season’s best signing for any team.”

Suarez has scored one goal in 17 La Liga appearances for Diego Simeone’s side so far this season.

He has also netted once in the Champions League for the Spanish outfit.

Suarez made his full international debut for Spain back in 2013 but only has two caps to his name. He joined Atletico from Mallorca back in 2010 and has scored four La Liga goals in 116 games for the Spanish side.
