Ashley Young says the Manchester United squad are desperate to impress manager Louis van Gaal.

The Red Devils have endured a mixed first season under the 63-year-old Dutch coach, who was named as David Moyes’ permanent successor at Old Traffod last May.

United are in fourth place and two points ahead of nearest rivals Liverpool ahead of the 20-time English champions’ trip to Anfield in the Premier League on Sunday.

Young, who has been regularly deployed at left wing-back this season, underlined United’s determination to pick up points at the business end of the campaign.

“There are obviously players in the team who have improved,” Young told United’s website. “When the manager asked us to do a job at the start of the season, he was honest and truthful in what he wanted to do.

“We all wanted to impress, especially when he came in during pre-season as a new manager. Everybody wants to do well and we’ve kicked on from there. We’ve now come down to the business end of the season and this is where it is vitally important to pick up points until the end.”

United make the short trip to top-four rivals Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday, looking to move five points clear of the Merseyside outfit.

The Red Devils have won their last three Premier League games against Sunderland, Newcastle United and Tottenham.

However, Van Gaal’s side crashed out of the FA Cup after a 2-1 defeat by bitter rivals Arsenal at Old Trafford earlier this month.
