Arsenal missed a trick by playing Mesut Ozil in the number 10 role instead of in-form Santi Cazorla against Monaco, according to former Chelsea midfielder Pat Nevin.

The Gunners crashed out of the competition despite a 2-0 victory at Stade Louis II as Arsene Wenger’s side were made to pay for a 3-1 first-leg defeat at Emirates Stadium.

Olivier Giroud and Aaron Ramsey did beat Monaco goalkeeper Danijel Subasic in Monaco, however, the Gunners couldn’t manufacture a third goal which would have sealed their passage.

Chelsea legend Nevin felt Wenger would have been better-served playing Cazorla further up front after Ozil struggled to create any clear cut chances against the Ligue 1 side.

Nevin told BBC Sport: “I wonder about the decision to leave Mesut Ozil on the pitch in that number 10 position. He was poor, his final ball wasn’t good at all.

“He had to be brilliant tonight, core to everything. Ozil was very average tonight. He tried hard but I wanted Santi Cazorla in there. If I have any complaint about Arsenal tonight, that’s it.”

Cazorla has scored seven goals and has made nine assists in 35 appearances in all competitions for the north London club this season.
