Frank Lampard has admitted that he never thought he’d win the Champions League after a series of semi-final and final heartbreaks before Chelsea’s triumph in Munich in 2012.

The England international was part of the Blues sides that reached the last-four of Europe’s premier club competition in 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2009, losing twice to Liverpool as well as Monaco and Barcelona.

Chelsea went a step closer in 2008 but the Blues lost to bitter rivals Manchester United on penalties before Roberto Di Matteo’s won the Champions League following a dramatic shootout against Bayern Munich three years ago.

Lampard controversially joined Manchester City last summer ahead of a permanent switch to New York City FC after calling time on his Chelsea career, and the 36-year-old midfielder reflected on a fulfilled career.

Asked by Match Of The Day Magazine to write his own ending to his career in England, Lampard said: “I’d like to play more minutes and games – that would be a start! Football is not always about fairytales, but my career as a whole has been a fairytale.

“I never dreamed I’d get to win the Champions League with Chelsea and play for my country over 100 times. I’m pretty happy with that!”

City travel to Camp Nou on Wednesday night after a 2-1 defeat by Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie last month.
