Jamie Carragher says it is vital that Liverpool don’t lose to Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday.

The Red Devils can hoist themselves above Louis van Gaal’s side if the Reds are winners against the 20-time English champions.

If United were to win and go give points clear with eight games to go, it would be difficult for Liverpool

However, if the visitors leave Merseyside with a victory, Liverpool will trail fourth-placed United by five points in the race to secure a Champions League qualifying spot.

Former Liverpool centre-half Carragher reckons Brendan Rodgers’ men will get the job done against United and qualify for Europe’s premier club competition in successive season.

Carragher told Irish radio station Newstalk: “I fancy Liverpool. United were outstanding last week against Spurs on the back of very good results.

“Liverpool are getting performances and results. I fancy Liverpool being at home. Liverpool will go above United if they win. I fancy Liverpool to edge it.

“I don’t think it is vital they win, but it is vital they don’t lose. If United were to win and go give points clear with eight games to go, it would be difficult for Liverpool.”

Liverpool kept the pressure on United in the race for a top-four finish with a 1-0 win against Swansea City at Liberty Stadium on Monday night.

The 18-time English champions are unbeaten in 13 Premier League games since a 3-0 defeat by United at Old Trafford in mid-December.
