Brendan Rodgers believes that Liverpool are capable of finishing second in the Premier League ahead of Arsenal and Manchester City this season.

The Reds kept pace with the Premier League’s top four on Monday night after Jordan Henderson’s second-half goal gave the Merseyside club a 1-0 win at Swansea City.

That victory left Liverpool in fifth place in the table but just four points behind second-placed Manchester City.

The target is to finish as high as we can

And with nine games left to play this season, Liverpool boss Rodgers feels that his side can match last term’s achievement of a second-place finish.

“Manchester City’s result at the weekend gives us an opportunity to finish second,” Rodgers told BBC Sport at Liberty Stadium on Monday night.

“Our mentality, the run and confidence we have at the moment we’re just going to take that into every game and see where it takes us.”

He continued: “We’ve put ourselves in a great position. There is still a lot of work to go so we’ll recover now and get ready for the weekend.

“The target is to finish as high as we can. Everyone talks about fourth but it’s the same every year for me. We do the best we can do.”

Liverpool, who are unbeaten in 13 top-flight games, are just two points behind fourth-placed Manchester United, and host the Red Devils at Anfield in the Premier League next Sunday.

“We can’t wait,” Henderson told BBC Sport after Monday’s victory. “We’re high on confidence, we’ve got great momentum.

“It will be a tough one but at Anfield we’ll go into the game full of confidence and we hope we’ll get the result we need.”

Liverpool’s 1-0 win at Swansea meant that the Reds have matched a club record of six consecutive top-flight away clean sheets, set in 1966 and equalled in 1972.
