Denis Irwin has backed Luke Shaw to blossom into a top Manchester United defender.

The England international didn’t feature against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday as the Red Devils eased to a comfortable 3-0 victory over the north London club.

Shaw has experienced an injury-hit first season at Old Trafford following his £27m move to the 20-time English champions from Southampton last summer.

Irwin, who won five Premier League titles during his United career, is confident that the teenager will be a success at the 20-time English champions.

“I have no doubt he will be a great player for us in years to come,” Irwin is quoted as saying by FA’s website.

“Until he gets a run of games I don’t think you are going to see the quality Luke Shaw can bring to a side.

“When he gets that under his belt you will see the best of him.

“Hopefully he will stay injury-free for us for the rest of year and get a run of games.”

Shaw has started just 12 of United’s 29 Premier League games this season, making a further appearance from the substitute’s bench.

The left-back made 35 appearances in his first full season in the Premier League, earning a move to United.
