United have endured a stuttering start to life under Van Gaal since his appointment as David Moyes’ permanent successor last summer.
The Red Devils crashed out of both domestic cup competitions early on and struggled to find consistent form in the Premier League.
However, with United now fourth in the table heading into the final eight games of the season, Van Gaal’s men appear to be on course to secure Champions League qualification.
And former Chelsea man Hasselbaink has spoken in glowing terms of the Manchester United manager.
Hasselbaink is quoted as saying by Goal: “He [Van Gaal] is mild! I’m telling you. I need to find the time to go over to Manchester and have a cup of coffee or tea with him when he is not that busy.
“He is somebody who tells you exactly what he wants, how he wants and when he wants. There are no prisoners. But he is a very loving man and a top coach, one of the best in the world.
“Of course he has come in for criticism because he is manager of one of the biggest clubs in the world, but let’s not forget, Manchester United is changing.
“I am 100 per cent he will succeed and they will play attractive football.”
United host Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon as they look to build on their impressive 2-1 win at Liverpool in their most recent top-flight outing.
The Red Devils are currently a point behind third-placed Arsenal.
