Louis van Gaal has insisted that he does not expect Angel di Maria to leave Manchester United in the summer, despite the speculation surrounding the winger’s future.

The 27-year-old’s situation at Old Trafford as been a source of uncertainty in recent weeks following his patchy form for the Red Devils.

Di Maria has scored three goals and made eight assists in 20 Premier League games for Van Gaal’s side this season.

However, he has not found the net since 4 January and was sent off during United’s FA Cup defeat by Arsenal at Old Trafford last week.

There have been suggestions that Di Maria could be set to quit Old Trafford a year after joining the Red Devils in a British record £59.7m deal last summer.

However, Van Gaal does not expect him to leave the club at the end of the season.

Speaking at a news conference on Friday, Van Gaal said: “I think he’ll stay. His reaction and attitude after the defeat and the red card has been good.

“I am always compassionate about a player’s needs and although I cannot say anything for definite about his future, I don’t think he will move.”

Di Maria is suspended for United’s Premier League clash with Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
