Arsene Wenger insisted that Arsenal are set to finish the season on a high, despite their Champions League elimination at the hands of Monaco.

Trailing 3-1 from last month’s first leg, the Frenchman watched his side produce a valiant display as goals from Olivier Giroud and Aaron Ramsey handed the north Londoners a 2-0 victory at Stade Louis II.

However, the Gunners were knocked out at the last-16 stage for the fifth successive season as they were eliminated on away goals after a 3-3 aggregate draw.

Overall, I think we are on a positive trend

Wenger’s men are through to the FA Cup semi-finals and are currently third in the Premier League table with nine games to go.

And despite the disappointment of their European exit, Wenger feels that the season could still be a positive one for his side.

“We are very disappointed to go out tonight, but overall I think we are on a positive trend,” said Wenger, speaking at his post-match news conference in Monaco.

“Of course [we don’t want our season to slip away], we want to win the next game and we knew before the game we had 98 per cent chances to be out.

“But we did fight and I felt some players were a bit jaded as we gave a lot on Saturday [against West Ham] and we lacked a little bit of freshness at the end.

“If you just look at the game tonight, I think it’s a positive game for us.”

Arsenal’s next game is a trip to Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.
