Phil Neville has warned Manchester United that they can ill afford to take their foot off the pedal in the race for Champions League qualification.

The Red Devils maintained their place in the top four thanks to an impressive 3-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

They have to go to Anfield next Sunday and win, not just draw

Goals from Marouane Fellaini, Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney handed Louis van Gaal’s side a comfortable victory in what was an impressive attacking display from the Red Devils.

But former United defender Neville says that Van Gaal’s men must adopt a similarly attacking approach when they travel to Anfield to face Liverpool next Sunday.

Speaking to BBC Sport after United’s win over Spurs, Neville said: “I think Van Gaal has to stick with the same positive approach between now and the end of the season.

“There are only nine games left and the clock is ticking. United need to keep winning to get in the top four. That means gambling and playing high-risk football, but I think going for it is their best option now.

“They have to go to Anfield next Sunday and win, not just draw.”

Sunday’s victory left United in fourth place in the Premier League table and just a point behind third-placed Arsenal heading into the final nine games of the season.

United are also now just two points behind Manchester City after the defending champions’ loss to Burnley on Saturday.
