Lucas Leiva is back in training with Liverpool ahead of Sunday’s Premier League showdown with Manchester United at Anfield, Brendan Rodgers has confirmed.

The Brazilian midfielder has been out of action since early February due to an adductor injury but will be assessed in the build-up to this weekend’s top-four showdown on Merseyside.

The Northern Irishman also revealed that Mario Balotelli has returned to training ahead of Sunday’s clash after missing Monday’s victory at Swansea City due to illness.

“Lucas Leiva is back, which is great,” Rodgers told a news conference on Friday afternoon. “We’ll assess him tomorrow and see where he’s at.

“[Balotelli] was ill and been off for nine days. He has just started to train in the last couple of days, but he is feeling much better.

“One or two other players are returning, so the squad is strong and in good condition.”

Liverpool head into Sunday’s top-four clash knowing that victory will hoist them above United and into fourth place in the Premier League table going into the final eight games of the season.

The Reds are in fine form domestically, having won eight of their last 10 Premier League games. Rodgers’ side are the only team left in the English top flight not to have lost a game in 2015.
