Wayne Rooney has described Louis van Gaal as a “genuinely nice guy” as the Dutchman approaches the end of his first season in charge at Manchester United.

The Red Devils endured a stuttering start to the Dutchman’s reign at Old Trafford but United are now on course to secure qualification for next season’s Champions League.

United are currently fourth in the Premier League table heading into the final eight games of the season and just a point behind third-placed Arsenal.

And Rooney says that Van Gaal has been fully approachable since his arrival at United as David Moyes’ permanent successor last summer and is willing to discuss issues both on and off the pitch with his players.

Speaking to MUTV, United captain Rooney said: “He is very approachable. He always says to his players you can go and talk to him, whether it is about football or other things.

“He is 100 per cent serious when it comes to training but if you are speaking to him about other things, he is a genuinely nice guy. He is someone that as a player, you can trust.”
