Goals from Marouane Fellaini, Michael Carrick and Rooney helped Louis van Gaal’s men race into a 3-0 lead against Spurs at Old Trafford as the Red Devils ran riot against the north London side.
That was probably the best 45 minutes we’ve had all season
And captain Rooney was delighted with how Van Gaal’s side responded to their disappointing FA Cup loss to Arsenal last week against the Lilywhites.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Rooney said: “We knew it was a big game, obviously with Manchester City losing on Saturday and Southampton drawing before we came out.
“It was a big game for us to take some points off Tottenham and these are three great points for us.
“We have played well a few times this season. Particularly in the first half, that was probably the best 45 minutes we’ve had all season.
“In the second half we knew we didn’t want to lose advantage of the three goals that we had, so we defended really well, we saw the game out and won the game.”
Sunday’s win kept top-four chasing United in fourth place in the Premier League table and just a point behind third-placed Arsenal heading into the final nine games of the season.
Rooney’s strike against Spurs was his 13th of the season, and the 29-year-old England captain was thrilled to get on the score-sheet again at Old Trafford.
“It was obviously a nice goal,” said Rooney. “I think it was a mistake by [Nabil] Bentaleb and I picked the ball up, saw that I had no team-mates around and I just went for it, attacking the defence. Thankfully I went through and scored.”
