Mats Hummels has denied reports that he has “promised” to join Manchester United this summer.

The Germany international has long been touted as a target for the Red Devils and was linked with a move to Old Trafford last summer as Louis van Gaal looks to shore up his defence.

Reports linking Hummels with a summer switch to Manchester United have gathered pace this week, with the Red Devils reported to be weighing up a bid for the Borussia Dortmund man.

However, the player himself has now moved to play down that speculation by insisting that he has not agreed a move to Old Trafford.

Hummels tweeted on Tuesday night: “To clarify it: this supposed “promise” is simply fictitious and that’s the friendly formation.”

Hummels has scored one goal in 17 Bundesliga games for Jurgen Klopp’s Dortmund team so far this season.

Van Gaal’s United side return to Premier League action against Aston Villa on Saturday afternoon at Old Trafford, with the Red Devils currently fourth in the table.
