Mathieu Debuchy admits that it has been far from an ideal first season at Arsenal for the Frenchman.

The right-back has made just 13 appearances for the north London club since joining the Gunners from Newcastle United last summer after suffering serious ankle and shoulder injuries.

The defender is now closing in on a comeback after dislocating his shoulder at the start of the year.

But the 29-year-old concedes that his long spells on the sidelines this season have been difficult to take.

Speaking to the Daily Star, Debuchy said: “It hasn’t been easy for me to undergo two operations in the same season, but I am still positive.

“I’m no longer in pain, I went into challenges and I made tackles. I now need to regain my rhythm.

“It is going to be difficult for Arsenal to win the title, as Chelsea are doing very well, but it would be great if we can finish second.”

Debuchy made his latest comeback in a 4-0 friendly win over Brentford on Tuesday at Arsenal’s London Colney training ground.

The defender is not expected to be fit to feature for Arsenal in Saturday’s Premier League clash with Liverpool at Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners are currently third in the Premier League table heading into the final eight games of the season.
