Paul Merson is backing Arsenal to beat Liverpool on Saturday and claim a result which could effectively end the Reds’ hopes of Champions League qualification.

The Gunners host the Merseyside outfit at Emirates Stadium looking for a victory to continue their recent good run of form.

Arsenal are currently third in the Premier League table and just a point behind defending champions Manchester City heading into the final eight games of the season.

Liverpool suffered a disappointing 2-1 loss to their top-four rivals Manchester United at Anfield in their most recent outing.

And former Arsenal midfielder Merson feels that the Gunners will have too much for Brendan Rodgers’ side at The Emirates on Saturday lunchtime.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Merson said: “Liverpool cannot afford to lose at The Emirates. If they do and Manchester United win then they could find themselves eight points behind Louis van Gaal’s side. That’s far too many with the way United are playing at the moment.

“There will also be plenty of pressure on Raheem Sterling to perform after his comments this week and that could hinder Liverpool.

“I fancy the Gunners to win this 2-1. It’s Arsenal all over – the way they’ve hit form right at the end of the campaign but the same mistakes will probably occur at the start of next season.”

Meanwhile, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger and striker Olivier Giroud were named the Premier League manager and player of the month for March on Friday morning after an impressive month for the north London side.
