The 20-year-old forward was reported to have rejected a £100,000-a-week offer from the Reds earlier in the season, prompting negotiations to be put on hold.
He doesn’t need to move clubs in my opinion. For his football development, he needs to stay at Liverpool. He plays every week
However, speculation on Monday night suggested that the England international will inform Liverpool that he wants to leave in the summer amid reported interest from Arsenal, Chelsea and Real Madrid.
Former Reds centre-half Carragher reckons Sterling has been misled by his management team, adding that the England forward should stay at Anfield to aid his development.
“For a 20-year-old kid and his agent to be taking on the club, there’s nothing worse than that,” Carragher told Sky Sports.
“Forget his performances and forget how much money he wants, you just keep your mouth shut and get on with playing football.
“He’ll move on in years to come but how will he be thought of for the rest of his career? You’ve got to think about how you will be thought of, as well as just your ability. And it’s about time his agent stopped leaking stories, never mind the football club leaking stories.
Carragher added: “He doesn’t need to move clubs in my opinion. For his football development, he needs to stay at Liverpool. He plays every week.”
Sterling has scored seven goals and has made seven assists in 35 Premier League appearances for the Merseyside outfit this season.
The Liverpool forward has netted 18 times in 91 top-flight games after he made his debut under Kenny Dalglish in March 2012.
