Steven Gerrard has urged the Liverpool owners to back Brendan Rodgers in the summer transfer market so the manager can add some quality players to his squad.

The Reds are set to finish just short of fourth-place and a spot in next season’s Champions League after a 1-1 stalemate with Chelsea last weekend left them six points behind Manchester United with two games to play.

We’ve come very close in a couple of cup competitions this year and we’ve also got close to the top-four positions and that’s with losing arguably the best player in the world last year in Luis Suarez and also not having our striker not available for much of the season in Daniel Sturridge

Liverpool have scored just 50 Premier League goals this season following the sale of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge’s injury nightmare after the Reds netted 101 times in 38 games last term.

Speaking to the media ahead of his final Anfield game against Crystal Palace on Saturday, Gerrard felt that Liverpool’s lack of goals contributed to a below-par season.

“I think this season we’ve fallen a bit short, but I still feel there’s a fantastic core of players here with huge potential,” Gerrard said.

“I am hoping the owners will back Brendan again and bring in that bit of quality that can help us go one step further next year.”

Gerrard added: “We’ve come very close in a couple of cup competitions this year and we’ve also got close to the top-four positions and that’s with losing arguably the best player in the world last year in Luis Suarez and also not having our striker not available for much of the season in Daniel Sturridge.

“To come so close without those two available, I think we’ve done okay, but I think next year we can go one better.”

Gerrard is expected to make his final Liverpool appearance against Stoke City at Britannia Stadium on 24 May.
