Van Gaal spoke in glowing terms when asked about the England defender last month, declaring: “I believe in Luke Shaw” and backing the left-back to come good in the seasons to come.
Shaw has endured a stop-start first season at Manchester United since his summer transfer to Old Trafford from Southampton last year.
He has been limited to just 16 Premier League appearances for the Red Devils due to a string of niggling injuries but is hoping to impress his manager in the coming seasons.
And Shaw has declared his desire to repay his manager for issuing the public backing for the defender.
Shaw told Manchester United’s website: “I was really happy when I saw the manager had said that about me. Just to know he’s got trust in me is something special and I couldn’t ask for any more.
“With all the injuries, it’s been quite hard. My season hasn’t been the best but not the worst either.”
Van Gaal’s United side host Arsenal in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon in their penultimate game of the season.
