The England international has been heavily linked with a move to the 20-time English champions in recent months after an impressive season for the south coast club.
There’s bound to be speculation because he’s such a good player and has had such a good season
Unsurprisingly, Chelsea and United have been linked with a move for the England international, who is currently in negotiations over a new Saints deal.
Southampton director of football Reed is adamant that Cylne is happy at the south-coast club, lifting the lid on positive talks with the defender’s representatives.
“With Clyney it’s very much been the same as with Jay in that we’ve been talking for quite a while,” Reed told Perform. “It gets fed by speculation which doesn’t help.
“Ronald [Koeman] made a comment that there was a deadline but that deadline was more about getting a response, and that issue has been resolved. I’m in discussions with his agent and that has been very positive. Nathaniel has made statements that he’s happy here.
“There’s bound to be speculation because he’s such a good player and has had such a good season. We have to balance that against what he can do for us in the future and what we can do for him. We’re at a very good place at the moment in terms of the discussions going on and I’m confident that we will have a resolution to that sooner rather than later.”
Clyne has scored two goals in 32 Premier League appearances, racking up 2,787 minutes of top-flight action for the Saints, who have the division’s meanest defence.
The England defender has one year remaining on the contract that he signed with the south coast club when he first moved to the Saints.
Southampton lost Adam Lallana, Luke Shaw, Dejan Lovren, Calum Chambers and Rickie Lambert to their top-four rivals in last summer’s transfer window.
