Maria Sharapova came from a set down to beat Carla Suarez Navarro and win her third Italian Open title in Rome on Sunday.

The Russian dropped the first set her Spanish opponent but responded to secure a 4-6 7-5 6-1 victory at the Foro Italico to win her 35th career crown.

To win it for a third time is very special

Sharapova, who will be the second seed at the French Open, was pleased with her recent form and endurance.

“Looking at where I started in Stuttgart and where I am now, I feel I’m in a much better spot physically,” said Sharapova.

“I am prepared enough to be ready physically [and it made] a huge difference against someone who can stand a very long match. That gave me a lot of confidence.”

She continued: “It’s always a special victory. It isn’t my first time but when I’m able to hold the trophy again it brings back memories of winning it the first time.

“I remember coming to Italy as a little girl and this was one of the tournaments I dreamed of playing. Now to win it for a third time is very special.”
