Steven Gerrard was denied a fitting end to his Anfield career after Liverpool lost 3-1 to Crystal Palace on Saturday evening.

The Reds took a first-half lead through Adam Lallana but Jason Pucheon levelled with a brilliant free-kick before Wilfried Zaha and Glenn Murray scored late strikes on Merseyside.

Here is a selection of the best Twitter reaction from the professionals, past and present, in chronological order to the Liverpool legend’s final Anfield game.

Stoke City striker Peter Crouch (@petercrouch) pays tribute to his former team-mate: “You just knew this send off would be done right at anfield special special place . #Anfield #YNWA”

Former Liverpool midfielder Yossi Benayoun (@YossiBenayoun15) describes Gerrard as the most talented team-mate of the playmaker’s career: “The greatest player I ever played with,LEGEND!!!!!”

West Ham striker Andy Carroll (@AndyTCarroll) keeps his tribute short and sweet: “SG8 LEGEND!!!”

Barcelona striker Luis Suarez (@LuisSuarez9) tweets a touching tribute to his former captain: “Thank you, legend for all you made me live in Anfield and for all the joy you have given to the football world. Thank you my friend for everything. You are truly one of the greatest!”

Former Manchester United defender Danny Higginbotham ‏(@Higginbotham05) is sad to wave goodbye to one of the true old school Premier League greats: “Steven Gerrard rightly getting the send off he deserves. Only one of the old school one club players left now in John Terry. Sad times.”

Queens Park Rangers midfielder Joey Barton ([email protected]) believes Gerrard is the last of a dying breed: “Incredible send off for Stevie. Thoroughly deserved. Will there ever be another who epitomises a club like he did? #Legend #SG8”
