After squandering two chances to put his side ahead in the first half, the 26-year-old forward confidently slotted home in the 50th minute after being found by teenager Jeff Reine-Adelaide.
Much has been made about Walcott’s ideal position, with Wenger opting to deploy him in a central striking role on Sunday.
He has an eye for taking his chances at the right moment
The Arsenal manager was pleased with what he saw from Walcott and is backing the forward to find the net on a regular basis in the forthcoming campaign.
“Another goal for Theo and I’m not surprised by that because I played him through the middle,” Wenger told his post-match news conference at Emirates Stadium.
“I always said that he is a goal-scorer. The movement, the timing of the finishing, the speed of his finishing – he has an eye for taking his chances at the right moment.
“When he gets into these positions he can finish well. Yesterday he nearly scored when he came on. Today he scored and that shows that he will score goals.”
Wenger continued: “He has his own way. I believe he is not what you call an aggressive striker, he’s a mobile striker, and a striker who lives from the quality and speed of his movement. But he turns up in the right space in the box. He anticipates well and understands quickly, and with his speed of execution it makes it always very dangerous.”
Asked if Walcott’s form means he doesn’t need to sign a striker in the summer transfer window, Wenger replied: “Well, I can understand this question because we are in the transfer period but I can only repeat what I already said and I would not like it to be too detrimental to watching the game and enjoying it.”
The Arsenal boss also revealed that Walcott has not yet put pen to paper on a new contract with the north London club.
His current deal is set to expire next summer but Wenger is hopeful that the situation will be resolved soon.
Asked if Walcott had agreed a new deal, Wenger replied: “Not yet but we’re getting closer and closer and hopefully we can finalise it very soon.”
