Mertens’ future beyond the summer has been a source of speculation in recent weeks, with both Liverpool and Inter Milan reported to be interested in signing the 28-year-old.
Mertens was in impressive form for Napoli last season as he scored 10 goals in 50 games in all competitions for the Italian outfit.
However, after Napoli missed out on a Champions League spot following their fifth-placed finish in Serie A, it is understood that Mertens could be tempted into a move to a club playing in Europe’s elite club competition next season.
But the player’s agent, Massimiliano Capparoni, has poured cold water on the reports linking him with a move away from Napoli this summer, insisting his client is happy in Naples.
Speaking to Radio CRC, Capparoni said: “Mertens is an important player who is coveted by several clubs, but Napoli isn’t currently negotiating with anyone.
“I don’t think there’s any problems for his stay in Naples. It’s clear the market’s always changing, but the player does not want to leave a city that he holds close to his heart.
“Napoli could evaluate an important offer that comes along. There could be some interest from Inter, but for the moment there are no negotiations.”
