Toby Alderweireld has expressed his delight to start a new adventure with Tottenham Hotspur.

The Belgium international completed his widely-tipped move to the League Cup runners-up from Atletico Madrid on Wednesday morning.

Alderweireld is reported to have commanded a £11.5m transfer fee after the versatile defender moved to Spurs despite interest from Southampton.

The 26-year-old improved his reputation during a season-long loan at St Mary’s last season as the Saints finished with the second-best defensive record in the league.

However, Tottenham beat Southampton to the full-back’s signature, and Alderweireld was quick to take to Twitter following the confirmation of his transfer.

Alderweireld scored one goal in 26 Premier League appearances this season, racking up 2,263 minutes of top-flight action.

The Belgium defender will link up with his compatriots Jan Vertonghen, Nacer Chadi and Mousa Dembele at White Hart Lane.

Alderweireld played with former Ajax captain Vertonghen at the Dutch club before the Spurs centre-half moved to London in 2012.
