Roger Federer has beaten competition from the likes of LeBron James and Tiger Woods to been named as the world’s most marketable sports star.

In a study conducted by the London School of Marketing, the Swiss maestro leads the way ahead of Woods and fellow golfer Phil Mickelson.

“He may not have won Wimbledon this year, but it’s Federer’s personal characteristics which sponsors find so attractive,” said Jacques de Cock, faculty member at the London School of Marketing.

Tony Godsick, CEO TEAM8, told ATPWorldTour.com: “Roger is genuine, honest, down to earth, and gives his time generously to his partners and foundation. Companies look for role models and Roger is as good as it gets.

Tennis players featured prominently in the list, with Novak Djokovic seventh, Rafael Nadal eighth, Maria Sharapova 12th, Andy Murray 16th, Kei Nishikori 17th and Serena Williams 20th.
